Note

Shortly after posting this podcast, a regular listener (who is a mathematician) kindly sent me a message which I thought would be helpful to add to these notes. Thank you, Paul.

I just listened to your podcast "Niggling Heavenly Bananas & Rights in Spleens". I'm writing firstly to say a "thank you" for the podcast, which I have been listening to for a couple of years now. I like the idea of these shorter commentary podcasts between the more extended interviews.

Secondly, I'm writing to express what I thought to be a fundamental contradiction in Dr Hurari's argument, which your commentary came close to.

As a mathematician, I'm well aware, as are most people, that science itself is underpinned by mathematics. Yet nowhere in the brain of mathematicians or scientists, nor of anyone else, would the number "2" be found. Nor would any other number for that matter! Neither would "pi", "e", or "i" (the unfortunately named (?) imaginary unit), nor any other constant, theorem, or proof of mathematics. Yet the world of science is built upon these elusive objects. The world around us is manipulated and changed daily as a result of science, and by implication, these missing mathematical entities.

Would Dr Hurari dismiss the entire body of science because of his inability to physically locate its foundations? I doubt it.

Mathematicians have even tried to build the entirety of mathematics literally from nothing; the "empty set", abstracting even counting numbers from the physical world. Yet Gödel's theorem essentially states that no matter how carefully this is done, there are mathematical truths which are "self-evident" and cannot be formally proven – a blow to the hopes of early 20th century mathematicians who hoped that everything which is true should be provably so.

In essence, Dr Hurari's argument that human rights, money, and God, do not exist, applies equally to his own beloved Science.

Anyway, thank you for continuing the good fight!

Best wishes,

Paul.

Note

I am aware that the personnel of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff changed between "Operation Northwoods" and the Cuban Missile Crisis (most notably the replacement of Lyman Lemnitzer by Maxwell Taylor as Chief of JCS on the 1st of October 1962), but I still think mention of Northwoods in the film would have been a good idea. But maybe it didn't make it past the CIA filter. After all, in their book, May and Zelikow ackowledge "financial support" from “Harvard University's Intelligence and Policy Project, which is sponsored by the CIA's Center for the Study of Intelligence” (p. xiv).

However, I can't agree with the author's defence of LeMay. In the transcript LeMay does use profanity in the JCS meeting (arguably worse than that noted by Nelson); it was said of him by McGeorge Bundy that his plans had called for "a massive, total, comprehensive, obliterating strategic attack... on everything Red", which I think justifies the film's depiction of LeMay as being capable of saying "shoot the Red dog", even if he didn't in actual fact; and I don't think it's unfair to portray the Joint Chiefs as at least somewhat "conspiratorial" given the background of the Bay of Pigs and Operation Northwoods (even if the latter wasn't mentioned in the film). I also think, had Kenny O'Donnell in real life asked the pilot "to lie to his superiors if he's shot at", that that request—under such circumstances of imminent nuclear war—would indeed have been worthy of applause. The fact that the author doesn't think so, I find somewhat telling.] [See: https://www.fff.org/explore-freedom/article/when-the-pentagon-wanted-to-nuke-russia/]

Special Notes

1) Erratum: In the conversation, I mistakenly said that Joseph Goebbels became Führer for one day following Hitler's death. In fact he became Reichskanzler (Reich Chancellor), while Karl Dönitz became Reichspräsident (Reich President). It seems that, whereas Hitler had combined both Reichskanzler and Führer in himself, he wished that the roles should be split following his death and that Führer should be replaced by Reichspräsident. None of this affects the point I was trying to make—that there are always more goons waiting in the wings to take over when the current goon goes—but I thought I should correct my mistake. (I think that's right now. Let me know if it's still wrong!)

2) I do not wish to be misunderstood on this point, as I think I may have come over as more dismissive in the pocdast than I had intended. As I said in the roundtable, although I am currently not persuaded that Adolf and Eva escaped from the Führerbunker and travelled to Argentina, I am not certain about it. In fact—rather like the Moon Landings issue—I am about 60/40 about it (60 they didn't; 40 they did), and I certainly wouldn't criticise anyone who thinks they did escape or dismiss as crazy attempts to research the matter. Again, rather like the Moon Landings issue, I haven't spent very much time pursuing arguments and evidence for and against. (If listeners think it worthwhile, I am open to the idea of looking into these questions further.)

3) Although these didn't get a mention in the podcast (because the conversation just didn't go that way), I am aware of FBI and CIA interest in claimed sightings of Hitler in South America in the years following the war. I have consulted these documents.

  • FBI Report on Adolf Hitler in Argentina (https://vault.fbi.gov/adolf-hitler/adolf-hitler-part-01-of-04/view)

  • CIA: Hitler, Adolf_0001.pdf; Hitler, Adolf_0002.pdf; Hitler, Adolf_0003.pdf; Hitler, Adolf_0004.pdf; Hitler, Adolf_0005.pdf; Hitler, Adolf_0006.pdf, each accessible via (https://www.cia.gov/readingroom/collection/nazi-war-crimes-disclosure-act?page=1917)

4) In the film Grey Wolf : The Escape of Adolf Hitler, we see a dog that looks like Blondi. Given that later in the film we see two small gravestones, one marked "Blondi" and the other marked "Blondi II", it seems reasonable to think that Gerrard Williams (director, and co-author of the original book which I've not read) is suggesting that either Blondi survived and travelled with Adolf and Eva to Argentina (only to be replaced by another dog later on), or that they carried Blondi's ashes with them. Either way, the claim seems to be that Blondi went with them in some form.

Mark is on most Mondays from 3 pm to 5 pm UK time, if you fancy listening in. (Actually, he's on most Mondays from 3 pm to 5 pm UK time, even if you don't fancy listening in.) He's very good at it. In a fairer world he'd be on BBC Radio 2 or something, but that's life I suppose.

John Ashe

"John Ashe ("spelt with an E") is either 60 or 62 years old and lives in Basingstoke, UK. In the 1970s he had two girlfriends (at different times), one called Maud, the other Molly. His hobbies include riding a pogo stick and walking with stilts (neither of which, contrary to the ignorant opinion of his newly trained GP, has any connection to his persistent back problems). Though not short of money, as a fairly successful, now-retired, quantity surveyor, John occasionally endeavours to supplement his pensions by buying and selling Cornish pasties and transporting them up and down the M6 to outlets from which he can gain the greatest profit before they go bad. He once (famously in Baskingtoke circles) won a second-hand lawnmower in a postal competition."

[Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events, is purely coincidental.] :)

Short Note

My guests and I refer to Wikipedia several times in this podcast. I am generally happy to do this on uncontroversial matters, but (as regular listeners will know) I am much more cautious when it comes to contentious subjects. I am keenly aware that Wikipedia is often used as a thought controller. Nevertheless, Wikipedia can (if read critically) often serve as a useful starting point for research.

While I think it arguable that the "Christian West" may have misinterpreted the phrase in Genesis, "have dominion over" (KJV), to mean "exploit", I believe that a correct interpretation should favour something more like "exercise stewardship over", or as The Message renders it: "be responsible for".]

Note

One further thought about the "block universe" idea. Why, if "time is an illusion", do we see patterns of evolutionary change in the cosmos? (I am not, here, talking about evolution/creation debates.) Isn't it well-established that the universe underwent evolutionary growth after the Big Bang, with its proliferation of galaxies and star systems, etc.? (We might picture that as a tree on its side, the base being the Big Bang and the twigs being us.) If so, why do those patterns exist? Don't they imply the reality of time? Why would the universe have a time "shape" or "pattern" if time is, in fact, illusory?

TMR 237 : The Brotherhood of the Bell : Notes

MarkFrankYoursTrulyOur Guests

Special Note

MarkRubbish

Many thanks to Frank and Mark for their patience. We agreed to do this film review over a year ago, but unfortunately I had to keep postponing the recording session for various reasons. In the event, that put me at an advantage, because my guests had made their notes on the film months ago, whereas I was able to prepare in the week immediately prior to the recording. Mark had even thrown out his notes a few days ago, thinking that we would never get around to doing the review, so when I eventually got back to him with a recording date he had to fish his notes out of the rubbish bin!

Notes from JC

  • Just in case anyone is wondering, no, I don't smoke cigars (or anything else!). I do like a glass of port from time to time though. :)

  • Also—and I'm quite sure many of you will have picked up on this—Antony and I sometimes do exactly what Adam Curtis does and say "everyone" when we actually mean "many people", etc., but, in our defence, ours is an unscripted conversation in which hyperbole is difficult to avoid, whereas Mr. Curtis is reading from his carefully-crafted script. Just saying...
